Independent desktop software catalogue

ToolHarbor

A quiet harbour for the tools your desktop actually needs.

We catalogue utilities, drivers, office suites and productivity apps, then explain in plain English what each one is for, where the official download lives, and when you can safely skip it.

Why this exists

Finding good software should feel like using a library, not a minefield.

Search for almost any desktop tool and you land on a wall of mirrors, bundled installers and pages that were last accurate in 2016. The software itself is usually fine. The route to it is the problem.

ToolHarbor keeps a small, deliberately short list per category. Every entry points at the developer's own release page, notes the licence, and says who the tool is genuinely useful for. If something has been abandoned or replaced, we retire it rather than pad the list.

No affiliate wrappers, no download buttons of our own, no bundled extras. Just a shelf you can trust and notes you can read in a minute.

Guides & field notes

Install once, properly, and stop thinking about it.

Our guides cover the unglamorous parts: checking a download against its published hash, reading an installer's optional-offer screens, keeping a driver rollback point, and moving a working setup to a new machine. Written for people who want the job finished, not a subscription.

Our standing rules

  • Every entry links to the developer's official site or repository — never a mirror we do not control.
  • Licence and platform are stated up front, so you know what you are agreeing to before you download.
  • Free and open-source options are listed first when they genuinely do the job.
  • Nothing on this site distributes software, patches or licence workarounds. We describe and link; you download from the source.
