Shelf 02 — Drivers & hardware

Drivers &
hardware tools

Find out what is really inside the machine, watch its temperatures and disk health, then update drivers from the people who wrote them.

Position

The vendor's download page beats every driver updater.

Almost every "driver problem" is solved by two facts: the exact model of the part, and the current release from the company that made it. Tools that promise to scan and fix everything automatically tend to add subscriptions, not stability.

So this shelf is deliberately weighted toward inspection. Learn what you have, confirm it is healthy, then go to the manufacturer's support page with a model number in hand.

  • 01
    HWiNFO

A full inventory of every component plus live sensor readings for temperature, fan speed, clocks and power. The single most useful thing to open before you diagnose anything else.

  • 02
    CPU-Z

Reports the exact processor stepping, motherboard model and memory module timings. Invaluable when you are buying matching RAM or checking whether a BIOS update applies to your board revision.

  • 03
    GPU-Z

Identifies the graphics card, its actual memory configuration and the driver version currently loaded. Confirms which vendor download you need before you go anywhere near an installer.

  • 04
    CrystalDiskInfo

Reads the drive's own health attributes and flags reallocated sectors or wear on an SSD. If a machine feels intermittently slow, check this before rebuilding anything.

  • 05
    Display Driver Uninstaller

Removes leftover graphics driver files and registry entries so a fresh install starts from a clean state. Reserved for the case where a normal driver update has genuinely gone wrong.

  • 06
    Snappy Driver Installer Origin

An open-source option for the specific case of a fresh install with no working network driver. Download the pack on a working machine, carry it across, install only what is missing.

A safe order of operations

  • Note the exact model first — laptop service tag, motherboard revision, or graphics card variant.
  • On a laptop, prefer the manufacturer's own driver page. Their builds often include power and thermal tuning that the generic package leaves out.
  • Create a restore point before graphics or chipset work, so an unhappy result takes minutes to undo.
  • Change one driver at a time and reboot between changes. Two simultaneous updates make the cause impossible to identify.
  • If everything is stable, leave it alone. A working driver does not need to be the newest one.
